A Kidswear US Buyers conversation

by Earnshaws for Playtime

It is a great pleasure for Playtime to host this talk with our partner Earnshaw's.
Allison Moroze, from Ali's Market, New York, moderated a lively and informative conversation about the children's fashion market in the United States. Joined by Jennifer Cattaui, designer of Babesta, New York, Lindsey Engler, founder of Picnic & Disco, Brooklyn and Vanessa Heins, who opened Casp Baby Mommy & Me, Vero Beach, FL.
Together, they talked about kids' fashion and lifestyle, shoppers, brands, parents, trends... what the brand/buyer/end customer relationship looks like today.
They shared with us their amazing expertise about the Kid's fashion market in the USA. And it is so informative! In a time where there is so much information going around we need experts to help us navigate through all the new consumer habits.

Let's listen to them talking about : How agents and buyers are preparing their season ? how are they buying? what are they looking for? what's new? What mums are expecting today?
We hope that you will enjoy this great talk and make the best of it!

Allison Moroze

Opening the doors of Ali's Market in July 2005, owner Allison Moroze brings over 25 years of experience in children's apparel to her own business. With a degree in fashion buying and merchandising from FIT, Ali has experience promoting both domestic and European clothing lines. Over the course of her career in wholesaling, Ali had worked in retail stores in her later years on weekends to understand the needs of the end consumer. She knows the combination of style and quality that Moms want and need in their kids' clothing.
Through the years some lines have come and gone, but Ali’s Market is proud to represent brands like KICKEE PANTS, ESME, BOBOLI & ELEGANT BABY to name just a few.
Its most important to Ali’s Market to find the right fit and buy for both the brand and the retailer. The goal at Ali’s Market is to write a client, not just an order.

Lindsey Engler

Inspiration can be found at the most unexpected moments. While walking her Brooklyn neighborhood with her newborn daughter back in 2011, Lindsey Engler was looking to shop for her new baby girl. Surprisingly, she was unable to find a store that suited her aesthetic, fashionable with a touch of whimsy, urban in concept but bohemian in spirit. During this walk, the concept for Picnic was born.
Ms. Engler’s fashion resume began long before the opening of her business. Ms. Engler holds a BA in design from The George Washington University and an MA in Costume Studies from New York University. She spent the early years of her career as Production Coordinator for IMG and 7th on Sixth working with designers on their signature runway shows in New York, Los Angeles and Miami. Ms. Engler then moved on to work with designers, holding positions in both marketing and wholesale sales for Chaiken, Elie Tahari and Andrew Marc.
Opening Picnic in early 2012 seemed like a natural progression for Lindsey as she grew into her role as a new parent. Applying the knowledge she had accumulated during her years in the garment district, along with her new position as a mom, Picnic has grown into a neighborhood staple for South Brooklyn parents. The concept of Picnic has remained simple, keep it fun, keep it engaging and keep it friendly. “Servicing the customer and their child’s specific needs have always been paramount to our business,” says Engler.
This level of service ultimately grew into Engler’s second location, a tween store located just blocks away from Picnic, called Disco.
“Our intention was to take the base Picnic customer who had grown up with us, and take them into the tween years, while keeping the same mindset. Disco is a continuation of Picnic, but we focus more on the tween wants and needs, versus the parent aesthetic that plays a larger role at Picnic.”
Picnic is now entering it’s tenth year of business and is moving locations to a larger space across the street in July 2021. Disco, in it’s fourth year of business is going strong and ever evolving to meet the tween customer needs.
Ms. Engler lives in Brooklyn Heights with her husband, daughter Grey and their dog Q-Tip.
