My Birthday Cake
For the Playtime show FW21, Kinda Magazine selected a daily lookbook, exploring the brand’s vision, and the relationship with their long-term favorite photographer.
the Third day, third lookbook: Tambere, with imagery by the incredibly talented Julylalala
Meet Tambere, the South Korean brand which never ceases to surprise us with their extraordinary tailoring, like oversized shapes and special patterns.
For those who have been following our low-key KINDA aesthetics for a while, this pick might come as a bit of a surprise: Yes, we do celebrate rich colours and strong patterns too! At least when they are embedded in a special universe like Tambere’s.
Their pieces are daring, like oversized tops and baggy bottoms, but they are never over the top. Tambere has managed to create a wonderful, poetic niche with their unique styles.
This lookbook came to life after photographer and graphic designer Julylalala had heard a birthday song on the radio. She has accompanied the brand from the very beginning, thus having a thorough understanding of the designer’s philosophy - plus, she infuses it with a good portion of warm humour. Just like a birthday cake is given with a lot of love to the main character of that special day, filling them with joy, this lookbook is supposed to deliver the same happy feelings to those who browse through it and ultimately to those who will wear Tambere’s upcoming collection.
We feel they have succeeded in all aspects which make for an interesting lookbook. There is a lovely concept that is well told throughout the whole publication - from colourful indoor shots to moody outdoor images.
The collection is presented by two lovely models who make a really convincing, joyful team.
In many of the indoor images, the bold patterns are echoed by equally boldly decorated backgrounds and yummy decorations - talk strawberry cupcakes and the like!
We also adore the nice doubling of graphic elements which are embroidered onto the garments in a playful, almost graffiti-like manner, and can be found in the location's kitchen as well.
What can quickly become too much - here it is balanced beautifully with some more low-key garments, captured in calmer moments. It also makes a nice change to the more classical, subdued presentations to be found in so many other autumn lookbooks. With this publication, the Tambere team has made a strong point for positive individuality. Thanks for leaving us with a big smile and a light heart!
